Mitigating climate change requires better use of renewable energy.  Carbon focused land management offers a number of possibilities.

Climate change mitigation

Climate change is the biggest challenge facing humanity today.  Atmospheric levels of CO2 are rising more quickly than ever before and there is almost unanimous scientific and political agreement that this is promoting rapid global warming.  Average temperatures have increased by almost 1ºC over the past century and the rate of change is increasing.  Increases between 2ºC and 6ºC are expected by the end of this century.  There is considerable uncertainty about the consequences of climate change but it has the potential to be extremely damaging to our environment and our global community.

While almost every industry fuels climate change and has a responsibility for management of its carbon footprint, land managers are in an unusual position because their activities also have the potential to positively combat climate change. There are two reasons for this. The first is that plants naturally trap CO2 from the atmosphere and turn it into organic matter through a process called carbon fixation. The second is that organic carbon can be sequestered and stored for long periods in soils and vegetation, or can be harvested as biomass and used as a source of energy in place of fossil fuels.

This gives land managers the possibility of practicing carbon farming. Sustainability is a key element to these practices, and this includes both environmental and economic sustainability. With carbon trading now established, realising income from these practices also becomes viable.

In Carlton Consultancy we are ready to work with stakeholders to develop sustainability plans which are tailored to their environment; and to optimise planning in order to maximise realisation of financial value. Effective communication is another important means of realising value by generating enthusiasm and strengthening image. We also believe that these approaches are able to provide further value by laying the foundation for broader stakeholder collaboration which, in turn, can provide new business opportunities.
