Timber residues

Opportunities exist to make better use of woodland clearance residues for energy production

Biomass

There are a number of opportunities to exploit biomass.  On the cropping side, an array of biomass crops and cropping systems exist.  These include miscanthus, switch grass and canary reed grass for arable type systems, or willow, poplar and eucalyptus for short rotation coppice and short rotation forestry.  Biomass products can be marketed for heat, combined heat and power (CHP), direct energy production, pyrolysis to biogas, oil and charcoal or for 2nd generation biofuel production.  Opportunities exist both for local exploitation through community use of biomass products and for large scale exploitation through power stations and refineries.

Finding the right mix of biomass crops, optimising the environmental potential and identifying the most appropriate market requires careful study but can ultimately be of enormous financial and environmental benefit.
